ARTIST
MARVIN FRANCIS

MARVIN FRANCIS is a self taught Artist.
Marvin Francis sculptures give the public a glimpse into prison life, exploration of a broad spectrum of political issues, and provides a way for him to revisit the few pleasant childhood memories.

As a victim of child abuse, Marvin feels that art has helped him heal and therefore he donates the majority of the proceeds from the sales of his art work to programs that help break the cycle of all types of child abuse.

Marvin's work has been exhibited in numerous group shows. 21C Museum in Louisville, Kentucky has many of his sculptural pieces in its permanent collection. The Kentucky Folk Art Center's permanent collection includes several of Marvin's sculptures. In addition, information about Marvin and his work is included in the archives of the American Folk Art Museum in New York City for research and curatorial purposes. In 2006 he won first place in an International Art Competition in Berlin, Germany.

Media: papier mache’ and acrylic paint Description: This is the largest sculpture Marvin has made. He made it after being invited to exhibit with 9 other Kentucky artists at a show at the Morlan Gallery in Lexington, KY. The coffin, which has a working lock on it, is constructed from slats made from papier’ mache. Two spider webs, also made from papier mache’, grace the lid of the coffin, which has an apparatus to prop it open. Time is an important concept in prison and Marvin has integrated this aspect by including a functioning clock in this piece. The clock has “Mortus Intra Muros inscribed on it. The figure, of someone who was executed, is wearing underpants and his autopsy scars are visible, the thread is made from papier mache’. The tattoo at the top of the executed person’s skull has a clock with the numbers 1 – 13 and the words “12 Jurors and 1 Judge. The figure holds a die, showing “snake eyes, in each hand. NOTE: The back of the clock comes off in order to change the batteries.
